Working Part-Time Jobs

Wednesday's Assignment

When you're on the job hunt, what's a good way to let others know about your goals and abilities?

One way to make yourself known is to dress the part.

Another is to make a resume.
Here are your tasks:
  1. Role play by yourself and then with a partner: Working Part-Time Jobs
    1. Rewrite the dialogue with your partner, keeping the words in bold.
    2. Publish your new dialogue with audio on your blogs.
    3. Check out your classmates' work, and leave a comment!
  2. Check out this page and take notes.
    1. Compare your notes with a partner, and ask your partner 5 questions from your notes.
    2. Check out your 5 positions from yesterday’s work (Task 3), and identify one to write a resume for.

Ling: Are you still here? I thought you got off at 3:00.

Yang: I took two shifts. I want more money.
Ling: But I thought you had another part-time job in the evenings.
Yang: I normally do, but the restaurant where I work has been cutting back my hours, so I’m trying to pick up as many extra shifts here as I can.
Ling: And don’t you work at the amusement park on the weekend?
Yang I do half the year, but it’s winter and the park only keeps a skeleton crew on during these months. In the meantime, I’m working for a temp agency, which gives me short-term assignments.
Ling: I don’t know how you juggle all these jobs.
Yang: I have no choice. I have to piece together an income if I want to pay rent.
Ling: Have you ever thought about going back to school to qualify for other work, something full-time
Yang: Sure, all the time. I’d like a better job, one with benefits and a reliable salary
Ling: What’s stopping you?
Yang: I have to pay for something called “food,” and I haven’t met my fairy godmother yet!

A special talk about my daughter
Hello, everyone. Today, in my presentation, I wanna give a special talk about my daughter Cindy. Why not talk something about myself? Because two months ago, I landed to Canada for the first time. And now I’ve been in LINC training and have to care for my daughter everyday. While my Dear Ling said, ‘Canada, I’m ready, I came.’ I have to say, ‘Canada, wait a moment’. I hope that the year of 2016 will write down new stories about me and everyone here. You know, I have a 7-year-old.daughter. She’s a very cute girl. She’s clever, outgoing and cheerful. She likes swimming, skiing, skating, soccer. And She likes reading, painting, playing piano, doing presentation, and so forth. So, I’d like to share some funny talks about her. And I even want to show her special presentation that was the recital in her public speaking class. Now, let me start.
One day, I picked up her from school. On the way home, I said to her. ‘Cindy, you are accompanied everyday, Dad needs a job to make money. You know ‘accompany’ ?’
‘A company? yeah, I know. A Chinese TV program said, ’a family is a company.’ In our family, Mom is General manager. And Dad is Assistant. ‘ She put on a show of surprise. Then burst into laughter and said loudly.
‘Interesting! but how about you ?’ I couldn’t help laughing and said.
‘I’m vice manager, of course ‘ She said with grin.
‘ then, how to make money?’ I said.
‘’Don’t worry. Dad, My savings are over 100$. I can help you and Mom.
And, to make more money, maybe I can do translator for newcomers in my class.’ She said with a happy chuckle.
‘Sounds great!’ I said and laughed even more.
On a Saturday morning, I cleaned the snow around my house and did laundries. ‘Cindy, Dad is so tired. You know, you just do homework. Dad must do so much housework. Why housework is my homework?’ I said with a smile.
‘hah, Dad. My teacher said, people have different works. But people should treat them as equal things. ’ She retorted quickly.
‘You are right. We should like our own works and work hard. Let’s go on.’ I said satisfactorily.
In this March break, as soon as she had gone to art gallery, science centre, cinema, gym & mall with parents, she plunged into the adventure camp. She’s so popular around everywhere. Here are some snapshots about her talks.
In the art gallery:
After a guide interpreter described a woman portrait of oil painting, she said curiously. ‘look, when your eyes move around her eyes, you will find she’s like Mona Lisa.’
‘A genius girl.’ A middle-aged man with long beards stared at the portrait, then turned round and said to me quietly.
In the gym:
‘after this running, you can go swimming, and take a bath.’ She said like a professional instructor.
‘awesome, thank you.’ A high school student said to her and laughed easily.
In the mall:
‘My mom said, last year her car’s right tyre hit the curb and the car broke down. Bad tyre is not safe ’ She said confidently.
‘ Amazing!’. a woman was waiting her husband to fix their private car and said appreciatively
So much so that I’m very proud of my daughter. Now, Let me take a special show ’little Miss Bossy’. Let’s start from three useful words.
nosy----- someone that shows too much curiosity about other person's affair
wizard---- a magician or someone who is very good at doing a particular thing.
Wilfred----given name, derived from Germanic roots meaning "will" and "peace"
OK. Start.
A little girl was very bossy. On Monday little Miss Bossy went for a walk. She met Mr Nosey.’ where are you going?’ He asked.’Mind your own business.’ she retorted.
On Tuesday she met Mr Noisy. He was singing. Noisily of course.’ Be quiet!’ she told him.
On Wednesday she met Mr Happy. He was smiling. As usual.’Take that silly smile off your face!’ she said. As you can imagine, Little Miss Bossy wasn’t very popular. To say the least.
Now, little did Miss Bossy realize, but somebody had seen her bossing Mr Nosey about.
And that somebody had seen her bossing Mr Noisy about.
And that self-same somebody had seen her bossing Mr Happy about.
The wizard whose name incidentally was Wilfred went home, thinking.

‘Something really ought to be done about Miss Bossy,’ he thought to himself as he walked along. That’s all. Thanks so much for listening.

My March Break

  1. Write 10 sentences about your March Break. Organize the sentences into paragraphs either logically or chronologically. To help you think of what to write, use WH questions like What, Who, When, e.g. What did I do on Tuesday?
    1. Use the editing checklist to check your own work first.
    2. Offer your new friends to check their work, but introduce yourself first.
    3. Publish your work and mention who helped you to check.
In this March Break, I did a lot of  things and shared a good time with my family
As most parents did  housework in their spare time, I piled up some storage boxes in my basement, cleaned rooms, did laundries and other housework with my family. In the very beginning, I messed up the floors, knocking round with my family. Finally, we were all cheerful when we saw everything in our rooms  tidy and clean.
Luckily, I got some coupons for March Break Activities the day before this break time..My wife and daughter did good guide interpreters for me. And we went to  Ontario Art Gallery, Science Center of Ontario, The Legislative Assembly of Ontario, cinema, gym, mall and so forth. It's my first time to land to Canada and have March Break time. I was so excited about the tours and programs of March Break Activities that I stayed up late to film the happy time no and then.Longing for another March Break and let's share our different stories in the happy time!

March 21 about me

  1. Who are you?
  2. What are your English learning goals in Level 4-5?
  3. What are your goals for this week?
  4. What have you learnt so far?
  5. What I have enjoyed doing the most?
  6. What I have enjoyed doing the least?
  7. Any other comments I may have
I'm Xinyang Zheng. I came from China. Two months ago, I  landed to Canada for the first time and now I've been in LINC class. The main goal of my English learning  in Level 4-5 is to get improvement in my speaking. And the other goals are to improve my listening and writing which are helpful to the former. In this week, It's  the first time for me to do presentation  I  had learned English in Chinese school /college for a long time. Though I had done a lot of  reading and writing practices so far,  I seldom did  speaking  and  listening practices. So, I'd like to do my best to do speaking  and  listening practices  from now on and  do well in my first presentation.
It deserves to mentioned, I like field trips very much and I have participated in all the actives. Honestly, I haven't done comments since I came to LINC class. I 'm glad to have met so many good friends in this new class. I enjoy having chats  with them and I think it's more useful  to do such kind of things.

Easter

Some people think that Easter is all candy and stuff, and the eggs, and the hunt that you hunt for Easter eggs, and the bunnies, and everything like that.
But it's really about Jesus dying on the cross, and getting beaten and spit on. And when He got nails in His hands, and when He got nails in His feet, and when He got on the cross, and when He got in the tomb, and He stayed in His tomb for three days.
And Mary and the other girls came to put perfume and stuff on Him, but He wasn't there.
He was out of the tomb because they told the three girls that He would arise on the third day.
And He told them the truth, and He was standing in the garden, but they went away.
But Mary stayed because she was crying when she stayed because she thought Jesus' body got stolen.
But she thought that when someone talked to her, she thought it was the gardener

My skiing trip

  My  skiing trip

Yesterday I went to the Earl Bales Ski&Snowboard Centre with my family and classmates, having spent the second cheerful skiing time.
Skiing is not a familiar thing for me as a beginner. It was getting warmer from yesterday which made the melt snowed ground humid. When I grasped lasso to slide up to the hill I slipped down. And when I walked along the foot of the hill I fell down twice. However, skiing is an interesting sport full of challenging,  having attracted me practising again and again.  I attempted to do my best to try steering and stopping skills more over. The instructor encouraged me and showed me patiently how to well control my body while skiing.
Luckily, I got a lot of fun from skiing trip. I shared the good potluck with my wife and daughter and I talked the story of my first skiing in Toronto to my best friends in my hometown.
